Steve’s Say . . . Local Politics: Where Your Vote Really Counts!

Steve_Welcenbach_full_shot2As a Reality News reader you probably know that in addition to being a chemist, environmental professional, geologic enthusiast, avid proponent of the Abiogenic Theory of Petroleum Formation, Evangelist of increased carbon dioxide greening the planet and making life more vibrant, and LED Lighting consultant, I am the humble bearer of the title of President of the Menomonee Falls Taxpayer Association (MFTP). And what an important and potent weapon for promulgating the true conservative viewpoint this organization has proven to be in our community.

Every candidate we have endorsed and supported in school board, village board and county board races has won. We also supported the primary winner in one state assembly race. Other groups in the area such as the Common Sense Citizens of Washington County and the Ozaukee County Patriots have had similar successes in their local races. In fact, a huge wave of conservative success has been realized all across the state in the local elections of the past two springs.

This dynamic shows just how much power your vote has, especially on a local level. When local elections come around, I always say to fellow members and neighbors on our side “Your vote counts for twenty this time!” Since very few people really follow the local elections with voter turnout usually pitifully low, one person can have an enormous effect an any local election. Just ask hamilton school board incumbent Lyin’ Lynn Kristensen who got destroyed by upstart Brian Schneider or former Waukesha County Board Chairman Jim Dwyer who lost by a double-digit margin to Janel Brandtjen. Brandtjen has proven to be a true conservative and excellent reflection of the people who supported her election.

Another good example of people being properly represented by their government officials occurred just tonight as I am writing this article. The City of Brookfield board UNANIMOUSLY approved the plan for an entrepreneurial investment group to build a state of the art indoor gun range and training facility at 12730 W. Burleigh Road. The Mayor enthusiastically supported the project as well. What a tremendous example of government doing something positive - supporting the innovative economic ideas of individuals without subsidies or tax incentives or regulatory strings while at the same time expanding the community’s ability to cultivate their second amendment rights in a very constructive way.

Unfortunately one of the Waukesha County Board Members representing part of Brookfield won’t be very happy with what just happened at the latest board meeting. This current Brookfield County Board member is a progressive statist of the highest order. She certainly does not reflect the values of her voting constituency or Waukesha County in general. Yet she, being quite outspoken, is driving a huge effort from bureaucrats and other statists in insuring that the provisions of Agenda 21 as outlined in the UN document of 1992 are fully implemented in Waukesha County.

Conservatives need taxpayer groups in all municipalities and especially in every county. People of all stripes respond positively to the message of lower taxes and less government - a real winner in most households and neighborhoods. Call up all of your like-minded friends around you and get your own group going. You will quickly learn the tricks of the trade and begin having a huge effect on the outcomes of your local races.
