“A Republic if you can keep it”

By Riley J. Hood—Milwaukee County Constitution Party
The following was posted on forbes.com. “When Benjamin Franklin was asked after a session of the Constitutional Convention, ‘What kind of a government have you given us?’ he replied, ‘A democracy, if you can keep it.’ Our republic is founded on the principle that it will continue only as long as the people keep democracy alive. From Lexington to Korea, American youth have fought to preserve democracy. With each political campaign, the people who vote keep democracy alive. Each citizen who participates in community affairs is keeping democracy alive. Every act of mercy and helpfulness, every word spoken for freedom, keeps the democratic spirit alive. Democracy is maintained by passing it on from one generation to another in the school, in place of worship, in the home. At every stage, it must be strengthened. Let us therefore resolve to give to our successors a stronger republic than was passed on to us.” The author of this is a liar.
According to the notes of James McHenry, when asked by Elizabeth Willing Powel, in Philadelphia, 1787, “What form of government was created by this new constitution, a democracy or a monarchy? Without hesitation, Franklin answered, A Republic Madame If you can keep it!”  Republics and Democracies are not interchangeable forms of government, and the Democrat Party knows it. That is why they are bent on altering our forms of Government, and they are truly aliens among us. One hundred years ago, they by the 17th Amendment changed our elections to US Senate; which was founded to represent the States: into a popular vote. Now we have two houses representing the “will of the people.” In 2016 the Democrats wanted to dismantle the Electoral College because they believe sovereignty resides in a popular vote.
The Milwaukee County Constitution Party supports only a republican form of government.  So does the US Constitution which clearly states in Article 4, Section 4, “The United States shall guarantee to every state in this Union a republican form of government.”  Not a democracy—it says “republican!”  True support of the Constitution means defending individual rights and upholding rule of law, not rule of a popular vote or a black lives matter mob. Why is this difference so important?  Understand, the Founding Fathers knew exactly what a democracy was and that’s why they did NOT want it.  The definitions below are from the official 1928 Soldiers Field Training Manual and best explains the contrast between the two. A democracy is: “A government of the masses.  Authority derived through mass meeting or any other form of “direct” expression: Results in mobocracy.  Attitude toward property is communistic—negating property rights.  Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate, whether it be based on deliberation or governed by passion, prejudice and impulse, without restraint or regard to consequences; Results in demagogism, license, agitation, discontent and anarchy.” A republic is: “Authority is derived through the election by the people, of public officials best fitted to represent them.  Attitude toward property is respect for laws and individual rights, and a sensible economic procedure.  Attitude toward law is the administration of justice in accord with fixed principles and established evidence, with a strict regard to consequences.  Avoids the dangerous extreme of either Tyranny or Mobocracy:  Results in statesmanship, liberty, reason, justice, contentment and progress.”
What did America’s founders think of democracy? “Remember, a democracy never lasts long.  It eventually wastes, exhausts and murders itself.  There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.” John Adams. “Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their death.” James Madison. Madison adds, “If Congress can employ money indefinitely to the general welfare,” then “The powers of congress would subvert the very foundation, the very nature of limited government established by the people of America.”
“The experience of all former ages has shown that of all human governments, democracy was the most unstable, fluctuating and short-lived.” John Quincy Adams. “A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.” Thomas Jefferson, founder of the Democratic-Republican Party.
We agree with Alexander Hamilton, “We are a Republican Government,” or least we were. The Preamble to Our Party’s Platform declares: “The US Constitution established a republic under God, rather than a democracy.” “Our republic is a nation governed by a Constitution, which is rooted in Biblical law, administered by representatives who are constitutionally elected by the citizens.” “In a republic governed by Constitutional law, rooted in Biblical law, all life, liberty, and property are protected.” Democracy is a dirty word to us, and there is something subtle and sinister in the tone of the quote posted by florbes.com. as it twists the truth. We further assert that Nancy Pelosi was lying when she uttered Franklin’s maxim and used it as window dressing for an impeachment procedure which was mob-driven democracy in action.
